Denis Leary: Rebuilding New Orlean's Firehouses

New Orleans has yet to rebuild a single firehouse in the two years+ since Katrina--but the city is receiving help from actor Denis Leary and his charitable foundation. So far, they've rebuilt five, with two more slated to be finished in the coming months. Leary says it's a sad commentary on society when actors and musicians become the key players in helping a city rebound. Brad Pitt, Harry Connick Jr. and U2's The Edge are among the stars helping out.

Jerry Cremins, a member of the New York District Council of Carpenters has teamed with Leary's foundation to restore 22 of the 33 firehouses in new Orleans. Cremins agreed to sign on after viewing the devastation on a recent trip to pick up his son from a local college. The situation, has ,of course, proved equally frustrating to firefighters. Their fire gear is light sensitive, and is supposed to be stored in a dark locker to ensure maintaing as much fire resistance as possible. In a trailer that is next to impossible.
